Chocolate Applesauce Cupcakes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup cinnamon applesauce
  • 1 1/2 cup sifted flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp water

How to make Chocolate Applesauce Cupcakes


These delicious cupcakes, a combination of traditional chocolate and a spice cake, using applesauce in place of oil, have replaced plain chocolate cupcakes in our household forever!

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add egg; beat well.
  3. Sift together flour, cocoa and spices. Add to creamed mixture.
  4. Dissolve baking soda in water and add to mixture.
  5. Pour into greased or paper-lined cupcake pans.
  6. Bake in 350° oven for 20 minutes or just until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Do not overbake.
  7. Ice with white, vanilla icing.
